Francie Arboleda, M.A., CCC-SLP
SCCSHA President 2024–2025
Dear colleagues and participants,
I want to take a moment to express my sincere appreciation to everyone who joined us for the in-person workshop this Fall. It was an absolute pleasure to learn about AAC, Best Practices when Exiting Speech Students/Clients, and Incorporating Sensory Strategies into Speech Sessions- three fantastic topics from various Ascend Rehab speakers! We are truly grateful for the wealth of resources they provided and for the opportunity to connect with such a dedicated group of professionals as we prepare for the school year ahead.
Looking ahead, our SCCSHA board is excited to invite you to our upcoming Winter Workshop. We are thrilled to welcome Kristin Chmela, a board certified specialist in stuttering, cluttering, and fluency. She is the owner and executive director of Chmela Fluency Center, has provided TEDx Talks, and is co-founder and co-director of Camp Shout Out in Michigan.
The assessment and treatment of fluency disorders has significantly evolved in recent times, and Kristin Chmela helps to train SLPs around the globe in the latest research and practices regarding fluency assessment and interventions. During this workshop, Kristin will explore Person Centered Stuttering Therapy, a holistic approach to treatment. It promises to be an incredibly informative and impactful session.
We hope you'll join us for this exciting virtual event on Friday, January 24, 2025. Tickets will be available for purchase starting November 29, 2024, and we're pleased to offer bulk ticket options for groups wishing to attend together.

Possible Continuing Professional Development Changes for CA SLPs and Audiologists:
This proposed regulatory change, if approved, would become effective January 1, 2025. This will clarify definitions to reflect advancements made to speech–language pathology and audiology (SLP–AU) continuing professional development (CPD) courses delivered online, increase the number of self–study hours to half of the total required hours, remove limitations to the number of hours that can be obtained from courses that are related to the practice of SLP–AU, increase the number of hours that can be obtained from indirect patient/client care courses to twenty–five (25) percent, permit other opportunities to fulfill CPD requirements, and clarify current regulations by making CPD requirements consistent with the Board's CPD audit process and the professional learning requirements for similar license types and course content.

New Law Ensuring Funding Increases for Early Start SLPs and SLPAs
Assembly Bill 2423 was signed into law by Governor Newsom on September 28, 2024. This law requires the California Legislature to review and update funding rates every 2 years for providers like SLPs and SLPAs who work in Early Start, the California state early intervention system funded through the California Department of Developmental Services (DDS). This bill resolved the issue that these service rates weren't keeping up with economic changes like cost of living and minimum wage increases.
New Continuing Education Requirements for Hearing Aid Dispensers
Beginning October 1, 2024, hearing aid dispensers (HAD) will have new continuing education (CE) activities to fulfill their CE requirements.
